New In Karea: Karea Connect, Your AI Coding Tools Run From Your Tasks

·4 min read

This is the biggest change to Karea since it started. Karea Connect lets you run Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode on your own machine, straight from a task, and work with them from inside Karea. Here is what it does, how to set it up, and what else changed.

Karea Connect: Your AI Tools, Run From Your Tasks

Until now, an AI agent could read and update your tasks through the Karea MCP. With Karea Connect it goes the other way too: open any task, click Connect, pick a machine, a tool and a folder, and the session starts on that machine, already briefed on the task.

  • Your machine, your tools. A laptop, a desktop or a server, on macOS or Linux (Windows support is in preview). Karea runs the real Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode you already use, with your own login and settings.
  • Chat or terminal. Follow a session as a readable conversation, or switch to the real terminal. In the chat, permissions and questions become cards with buttons, and you can answer them from any page, even from your phone.
  • Sessions that keep running. Close the tab, change page, come back later: the session is still there. You get a soft chime and an orange dot when it needs you, and a blue one when it finished and you have not read the reply yet.
  • Every task knows its sessions. A task's Related tab lists the sessions that worked on it, which machine and branch they used, and lets you read or resume any of them.
  • Git worktrees, built in. Each session can get its own worktree, so two sessions on the same project never step on each other.
  • End-to-end encrypted. Everything between your browser and your machine is encrypted with a passphrase that never leaves the machine. Karea's servers only pass along data they cannot read.

Karea Connect is part of the Max plan.

The Connect Page

Every session from every machine in one place, under Connect in the sidebar.

  • Group sessions by project (with a sub-group per task) or by your own folders, show only the active ones, and archive the rest.
  • Read a conversation, open its terminal, or pop it out into the floating window, which follows you across Karea. Ended sessions can be read and resumed there too.
  • Fold the session list to a strip of icons when you want more room.
  • Hover the machine chip to see everything about a session: folder, branch, how long it was on screen, and its session ID, ready to copy.

Set Up In A Few Minutes

The connector is a small program you run on your machine. It is published on npm as karea-connect.

  1. In Karea, open Settings, Karea Connect, Pair a machine.
  2. On your machine, run the command it shows (it looks like npx -y karea-connect pair ...), and choose a machine passphrase.
  3. Start it, or install it as a background service so it is always on.

Karea's pairing wizard walks you through each step for your system, including Node and tmux. Later you can add a folder from Karea (you run the command it gives you on the machine: Karea itself can never open new folders), and update the connector with one click when a new version is out.

A Chat That Feels Like The Terminal

  • Readable requests. Instead of raw data, you see "Claude wants to edit this file" with the change in red and green, the command it wants to run, or the plan it wrote, with clear buttons.
  • Run modes. Pick how a session may act (ask first, accept edits, plan, auto, or your own Claude Code setting), switch with a click or Shift+Tab, and see the mode change live, even when you change it on the machine.
  • Type "/" to see Claude Code's commands plus your own commands, skills and plugins.
  • Your status line comes along. What Claude Code shows around its prompt on your machine, like your status line and the current mode, appears under the chat box.
  • Menus are answered from the chat. When Claude Code asks something on screen, like whether you trust a new folder, the chat shows the question with its options as buttons.
  • Codex and OpenCode get the same live state (working, needs you, finished), and Karea picks up their session IDs too.

Also New

  • Quick Actions Panel: Connect sessions have their own section and view, with their state, task, project and when they were last used. Click one to open it in the floating window.
  • Tasks: the session list on a task is cleaner, and the Connect button now sits next to the deadline prediction and activity readings.
  • Fewer surprises: tooltips no longer follow you while you drag something, and loading screens are smoother, with a new effect while a session starts.
  • A refreshed home page, with a new headline: your backlog, now executable.

As always, tell us what you think from the feedback button in Karea.
